The answer was simple enough, it seemed. Ellie bravely went where thousands have gone before: a bedroom, in front of a mirror and a rolling iPhone camera. But the first word she uttered on camera appetized millions of hungry viewers. 16.3 million, to be exact.

But Ellie’s GRWM video was different.

Ellie’s earnestness came into focus just as her cheekbones did. She barely explained what she was doing to her face and never mentioned a product by name. Rather, she confessed that she has tried to block everyone she knows on the app so as not to get bullied. More sinister theorists conclude that Ellie Ellis is a bot-farming mastermind. These critics, many of whom are longtime TikTok creators themselves, believe Ellie purchased followers from social media growth companies to fraudulently boost her to fame. “She bought her followers, guys. It’s literally not possible to get that many followers in such a short amount of time.”
