The road to a Stargate revival is full of twists and turns, but there may be a destination in sight. Following the cancellation of the Martin Gero project in June 2026, Amazon/MGM needed to find a new producer. They found one in Emmy-nominated writer and executive producer creator of WandaVision will take over this expansive, storied universe.
Jac Schaeffer will write a new Stargate revival series and serve as showrunner. Yet, she may have an uphill battle to win over diehard Stargate fans, after taking the lead on the return of the franchise. Fans were surprised at the speed of the decision, and many questioned whether the choice was in the best interests of the show. The usual social media discourse started, some of it, to be very honest, the usual unkindness we have become all to used to.
The Stargate Fandom Is Small But Passionate, And That May Be The Problem
Jac Schaeffer’s new role was first reported in Variety, and it kicked off the familiar pattern of fan discourse. Still, that doesn’t really matter now. The reality is that Amazon/MGM and Schaeffer need to win them. But how?
The return of many of the original creators excited fans about the Martine Gero project. He is a veteran of the the SG1, Atlantis and Universe series, and this revival meant continuing that larger story. Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi, two of the original creators, came on board as consulting producers. Fans were getting everything they dreamed.
The first thing Jac Schaeffer can do, to reassure fans, is confirm the new show will still exist within the universe created by Brad Wright, Robert Cooper etc. Fans biggest fear is a “hard reboot.” They do not want the legacy of SG1 to vanish. Similar to fans of generational franchises like Star Wars or Star Trek, a hard reboot would be unforgivable.
Who Schaeffer Brings Aboard Her Stargate Series Will Be Her Most Important Decision

Leo award winning director Amanda Tapping is well known to Stargate fans, for more than just her iconic smile. She starred as the iconic Captain. Samantha Carter in SG1 and Stargate Universe. She also moved behind the camera as a director. She helmed an episode of SG1, multiple episode of Sanctuary, Supernatural, The Flash, and more. Bringing her on board as a director or executive producer for the series could allay fans’ fears.
Whether Amazon/MGM executives and Jac Schaeffer decide to bring on Amanda Tapping or not, it would seem that they have to do something to bring fans around. If they don’t, the negativity will only grow. That online hate has brought down shows before, even before the audience ever even got chance to see the movie or series.
Hopefully Jac Schaeffer and her team will soon be able to start communicating their plans to fans, and take the wind out of the sails of many people on line already spreading hate against the revival. Because as a fan of Stargate, I can tell you that I am just happy Amazon/MGM is putting the franchise back on our screens. I hope fans will give them the chance to succeed.
